When I was A Child

While thinking about Mother's Day I remembered some of the things we did as a child. Our house was the neighborhood hang out.

When I Was A Child

When I was a child neighborhood children loved our house,
There was never a time when you found it as quiet as a mouse.
When mom cooked it was always enough for everyone,
Not just enough for her two daughters and two sons,
We played marbles and climbed trees.
Played hop scotch in the driveway because we had no car you see.
We walked to the grocery store and downtown.
When we purchased two or more bags of groceries there was always a cab around
Mom worked during the day and dad worked at night,
Mom spent time telling us jokes and tongue twisters,
all the kids together what a beautiful sight.
We had chores and still had time to play.
Our parents kept us from being bored in the good ole days.
We peeled apples and peaches for mom to freeze, can and make jam.
Dad even had a meat box for curing hams.
Sometime we had steak for breakfast instead of cereal to eat.
Chicken, pork and beef the freezer was full of those meats.
The house we lived in never leaked,
We always had to keep our room clean and neat.
It was not the best looking house in the world,
But it was the house that was filled with LOVE.

Pretty Is As Pretty Does

This is my first published poem. Published by the National Library of Poetry in 1994

Momma am I pretty our daughter ask me one day?
Wait a litte while is what I had to say.
A funny look on her face is what she showed me.
Then I thought may God help her to see.
A pretty face is a beautiful sight to see,
But what's inside is more important to me.
Because pretty is as pretty does.

A little girl that has an ugly face is sometimes more prettier it seems.
Her good persoinality or the inner person is what I mean.
Your clothes may be what every girl would like to wear,
But can you go through life with the criticism an ugly girl has to bear.
When your hair is all up in curls,
Not even that will make you a pretty girl.
God looks at the heart and man look at the outward appearance.
Now that is why I say pretty is as pretty does.

Each One Teach One

Each one teach one sounds great to me, that is not what we usually see.
Each of us should teach one person something good each day, what we
hear is do as I say.
Being a good example you do not have to always be talking the talk.
The reason for this is because you are walking the walk.
Others learn by what they see, whether it is good or bad depends
on you and me,
How can a baby learn right from wrong?
Parents began by being a good example in their home.
Teachers don't have time to teach them everything.
When you talk about teachers say good things is what I mean.
Each one teach one respect for someone.
This can help you be proud of your daughter and son.
Respect is good to have for each other.
Then we can show true love for all sisters and brothers.

Senior moments

This morning I went to a workshop. To get us talking we played a game. A roll of tissue was passed around; we were asked to take as much as we needed if we went on a trip back in the past for a weekend. Some took only a few sheets others a lot of sheets. Then we were told that we had to say one thing for each sheet we had. We learned a lot about each other. It was a lot of fun.

Poetry Contest

Have you ever entered a poetry contest? Tell me how you feel. The contest that I have entered ask that the poem is no longer than twenty lines. Another one said twenty four lines. I am waiting to hear from them. One contest I received a plaque with my poem printed on it. Twice I received Editor's Choice awards.
The poems are printed in a book. You can purchase a copy of the book but you are not obligated to do so. People like seeing their poems published. I enjoy reading the poems. If you send in a profile along with your poem you have to pay for it. Have not sent in a profile so do not remember the fee.

Class Reunions

Class Reunions are a great way to get to see classmates who have moved away. Remembering when you were in school and the good times you shared. When I was in school our teachers alway encouraged us to do good things and were examples for us to follow. When I attend a Class Reunions I really miss the teachers and classmates that are no longer with us. Our parents would invite the teachers to our home when we were growing up. If you got in trouble at school the teachers would alway call your parents.
Losing a friend last week make me think about our Class Reunion because that friend will never be able to attend again.

Kindness

On Tuesday so many people of different age and race were in Washington. While watching tv I could see the love and emotions on the face of many from all over the World. One Black wealthy man payed for a family of four (husband, wife & two sons), and other people to go to Washington. Not sure how many in all, hotel included. When people return to their home towns will they still show that love and kindness to other strangers. If people would see the person and not the color the world would be a better place to live in.
ACTS OF KINDNESS

Acts of kindness feed the soul.
It does not matter if you are young or old.
Deeds of kindness are good for mankind.
This can even be good for the mind.

If someone is having a struggle in their life,
It many not even be your husband or wife.
Look around to see if there is help you can give to woman or man.
There is always someone you can lend a helping hand.

Just a smile or a kind word for a boy or a girl,
Show that you have God's special LOVE.
To our children true love we can teach,
Then others this LOVE and kindness will reach.

Two Letters

This is a copy of my first poem. My daughter gave me two note sheets with scribbled lines.

Two Letters

One Friday two letters I got,
They were both from my daughter and I thank her a lot.
They were only two scribbled lines,
But she will learn to write in time.
I put them away for memories,
To bring back time in the future you see.
Because those letters wer mint just for me.

Words Inside My Mind

As a young girl I always had a love for poetry. I never thought about putting my words down on paper until my daughter was three years old. She scribbled some lines on two small sheets from a note pad and said "mom here are two letters". That was thirty four years ago and my first poem was Two Little Letters.

Sometime I would be doing housework and a poem would come to me and I would write it down on a napkin or a paper bag. Writing made me relax so two or three in the morning was my best time to write when my mind was fresh.

That is how I started writing poetry. Because of my daughter I began writing poetry and now she has me blogging.
